Warbleton Brass Band - A Living Tradition

The recent BBC documentary about Dinnington Colliery Brass Band has maintained the current fly on the wall trend for putting unlikely presenters into challenging situations and recording how they cope.

The Dinnington band are lucky to have experienced a revival in their fortunes due to the television coverage but almost hidden in the heart of East Sussex is a brass band that  maintains the tradition of banding without camera scrutiny-namely, The Warbleton Brass Band.

Founded in 1896,the band has been in existence to the present day, attracting generations of players, indeed two successors of one of the founder members play in today’s band.

In order to survive the band has had to cast its net wider than its immediate locality for players and it can be heard playing at Summer fetes, private functions, carol services and at prestigious localities such as Hever Castle but at its heart is the dedication of the players – all amateurs, young and old  - who turn out to band night every week to be put through their paces by their musical director who has to ensure that the musical quality is of sufficient standard for public performance.

The band is always looking for new members so if you can play, have played or would like to play, are experienced or a beginner, you can find them at Dunn Village Hall, Rushlake Green, East Sussex, every Friday evening from 7.30pm, email caroline@warbleton-brass-band.org .

With the distractions of everyday living the very existence of the Warbleton Brass Band is a testimony to the determination of its players to see that the tradition be maintained-remember,the band was founded in 1896.

We would like to think that in 2096 someone will see this article in the archive and think ,

"Yes,the Warbleton Brass Band is still thriving after 200 years!"
